Genre: Factual
Synopsis Having survived the mystery of China and the mayhem of India you’d imagine a European tour would be a walk in the park for Paul Merton… however in this six part series he discovers just how extraordinary, unexpected and bizarre our closest neighbours can be.
Paul begins his travel odyssey in a country he has never explored before, Germany. Here he gets up close and personal with the locals in a bath full of beer; discovers a family happily sanding down their latest wooden dildos, and spends the night in jail…
Paul then visits a place close to his heart, where his mother was born, and where he holds the happiest memories, Ireland. But there will be no time to reminisce… in this trip across the Emerald Isle he’ll find himself reborn through a giant vagina, hitching a ride with a Nazi platoon and having to think fast before being knocked out by cannonballs…
Not exactly rested, the next nation on his list promises even less time to catch his breath - can Paul survive Italy? With no language skills and unreliable guides, Paul begins to wonder if he can even last Rome, let alone the whole country.
In France Paul expects finally to find refuge from the onslaught, but even in the peaceful vineyards of Champagne he finds a battle raging; in the most civilised suburbs of Lyon there lies the dark and unnervingly world of Monsieur Ehrmann and his Abode of Chaos… Even the beauty of the Alps is disturbed by a man covered in wheels who speeds round the hairpin bends on his belly at 100km an hour.
By the time Paul arrives in Spain he is expecting the unexpected – and he’s not disappointed. Acrobatic bullfighters, 200-person strong human towers and a daredevil who throws himself off mountains. Final proof if it were needed that travelling with Paul Merton is never a smooth ride… (least of all for him!)
Paul Merton in Europe is a Tiger Aspect Production for Five and is released on DVD from 15th March, priced £19.99. |
